Case Study

Implemented a System for Managing to Reduce Variation

Issue

A diamond mining operation was experiencing high levels of variability in key operational areas making them less predictable and reliable than the marketplace was demanding.

Highland Approach

Working with teams of client personnel in affected areas, The Highland Group analyzed how performance was currently being managed and measured. The joint team determined that the organization needed standardized practices that would focus the operation on key business drivers. Furthermore, a specific set of management behaviors was necessary to support achievement of the objectives.

Actions Taken

  • Developed a set of core operating principles, which served as the foundation of the Operating System. Then applied the principles to work areas to develop and implement a set of standardized tools, processes and behaviors. This enabled a standardized way for work to be managed across the organization that reduced variability and increased operating discipline.
  • One–on–one coaching was used to accelerate the learning curve and facilitate rapid results.

The Operating System is not about working harder, it’s about working smarter.
